Australia's Strategic Outlook: 2017

Join us in Canberra for a special event on Australia’s Strategic Outlook: 2017. Young Australians in International Affairs is privileged to be joined by Professor Rory Medcalf, Professor Evelyn Goh, Andrew Carr and Iona Main on the 23rd of May at the Hedley Bull Centre to discuss Australia’s foreign policy outlook for the year.
Professor Medcalf is the Head of the National Security College and has two decades of experience across diplomacy, intelligence analysis, think tanks and journalism, including a formative role as Director of the International Security Program at the Lowy Institute. His research interests are in Australia's security challenges, the further development of an Indo-Pacific concept of the Asian strategic environment, and China-India relations.
Professor Evelyn Goh is the Shedden Professor of Strategic Policy Studies at the Australian National University, where she is also Research Director at the Strategic & Defence Studies Centre. She has published widely on U.S.-China relations and diplomatic history, regional security order in East Asia, Southeast Asian strategies towards great powers, and environmental security.
Andrew Carr is a Senior Lecturer in the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University. His research interests include Australian foreign and defence policy, middle powers and Asia-Pacific security. His recent books are ‘Winning the Peace: Australia's campaign to change the Asia-Pacific’ (MUP, 2015) and ‘Asia-Pacific Security: An Introduction’ (Georgetown University Press, 2016). Dr Carr is also the editor of the Centre of Gravity policy paper series, a co-editor of the journal Security Challenges and a frequent media commentator for both Australian and Asia-Pacific press.
Iona Main has served as a foreign policy adviser at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet in the International Division, where she advised on the Prime Minister's engagement with South and South-East Asian leaders, and with the region more broadly. She is now seconded to a special taskforce dedicated to planning the policy and logistics for the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit in 2018.
